Feature-packed code editing suite and integrated development environment with built-in support for the most popular programming languages full with syntax highlighting and a high degree of customization.
When it comes to coding, choosing between a text editor or an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is almost like a political statement. It's a big decision that can have a major impact on your coding style, productivity, and comfort.
If you're an IDE kind of guy, JetBrains is a popular choice for its highly evolved environment. But if you prefer the simplicity of text editors, Sublime Text is right up there with the very best, despite being incredibly expensive for a text editor, it costs more than JetBrains' excellent WebStorm JavaScript IDE.
One of the things that draws coders to Sublime Text is its leanness and simplicity, but don't be fooled by its surface-level austerity. Sublime Text is packed with clever auto-completion tricks, plug-ins, and more, all of which you can use to slowly grow into using its power.
Unlike Vim, which can feel inscrutable to the uninitiated, Sublime Text lets you dive right in and start typing like Notepad. But ask for more, and it will deliver.
Another benefit of Sublime Text is that it looks the same across Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X, thanks to its custom cross-platform UI framework. Plus, it has unique controls like the minimap - a miniaturized bird's eye view of your code that runs along the right-side gutter of the editing pane.
When working on long files, the minimap serves as a visual scrollbar that lets you instantly scrub around the file for points of interest. And the minimap is unique for another reason: its use of the mouse.
The rest of Sublime Text is keyboard-centric, with a real-time search algorithm that's remarkably clever. You can use it to quickly open any file in your project with just a few keystrokes.
Effortless column selection is another standout feature of Sublime Text. If you want to add the same bit of text along multiple lines, you can simply select a column of text and type your text. Multiple insertion points will appear, and you'll see your text entered into several spots all at once.
Sublime Text also has a system of plugins, the most important of which is called Package Control. This plugin lets you easily search for other plugins from within Sublime Text, and download and install them right from the editor.
Its search interface uses fuzzy string matching that's common throughout Sublime Text, and it's just as quick to use. When I needed to add a word count to the status bar, it took me less than a minute to use Package Control and find a plugin that did exactly what I needed.
